This is a great built in filter system, when setting up, firstly place the ceramic media which is never washed or replaced, in the filter tray. This is where the useful purifying bacteria lives.

The next layer is placed over the ceramic filter media and contains the carbon and fine filter mediums that remove chemicals and liquid wastes from the water. This needs replacing regularly.  

The top layer is the coarse sponge medium, normally black, that the water flows through as it comes out of the overhead sprinkler bar, this traps larger particles and solid wastes and should be rinsed through regularly.
