It is important to establish the cause of the distress or illness of the fish to ensure successful recovery. Most importantly decide whether it is the environment of the fish, the water condition or something that has changed the water before adding the fish medicine, as this is the most common cause of sickness in fish. It is clear that all living creatures carry useful and harmful bacteria, when in good health the useful flourishes, when stressed by external conditions the harmful bacteria gains the upper hand. So consider, have new fish been added and if so are the water conditions in your aquarium similar to the original in terms of temperature, pH, hardness and maturity, if they are then stress is reduced for the fish. If they are not, in the same way as we treat ourselves in the best possible healthy surroundings, make sure the fish are in the best possible surroundings when adding the aquarium treatment as well. The fish will normally be suffering from biological or parasitical infection. The parasitical is easier to identify, white spot is very obvious being pin head white spots in various places on the fish including the fins. Providing the environment is good it is very easy to clear up with our aquarium treatments. The biological problems are a little more difficult to identify, however they appear as more of a spread of white rather than individual spots, again after ensuring a good environment, use a wide range bacteria fish medicine and success should soon follow.
