T8 Fluorescent tubes are the original sizes and output tubes. T5 are the newer, high output, small diameter and different length tubes.              Compact tubes are the short U shaped tubes.               Metal Halide bulbs provide extreme levels of light.

All of these variations require the matching controllers and light fittings.

When the fluorescent tube is lit, it is emitting rays of light, from all points around its circumference.
When the tube is over an aquarium, any rays emitted from the top half of the tube are directed away from the water, and are wasted.
By using the reflector behind the tube, it is possible to obtain the maximum efficiency from the tube.
