Lets make this easy, your aquarium must have good water that is regularly freshened up with small water changes, good light is essential, change your light tubes annually. Be prepared for a little gardening and help with a little liquid fertiliser or as they get established add Co2 to the aquarium. Lastly, buy quality plants, you don't buy poor looking fish, so be fussy about the plants.

The increased growth of aquarium plants in response to Co₂ fertilization will convince any aquarist of the benefit of this addition. Many aquarium hobbyists do not give their plants any sort of special treatment and still end up with a reasonable display. But truly luxuriant growth, the type seen in pictures of aquariums will only be achieved by fertilizing with CO₂.

In a dimly lit aquarium, light is likely to be what limits the rate of plant growth. The amount of Co2 produced by fish and bacterial respiration is more than enough to allow photosynthesis to take place under these conditions, which will keep the plants alive. Increasing the light to make your plants grow faster, it is likely that there will not be enough Co₂ in your aquarium to feed the plants and make them flourish. The plants simply can not grow as fast as they would like to, given the available light energy.
