Afghan Hound's are formal, somewhat removed, but very sweet, friendly, affectionate and kind with a low superiority level. Afghan Hounds must be trained with a helpful and loving hand. The Afghan Hound has been described as 'the king of dog's' Solemn, stylish noble and daring, suspicious of, but never hostile towards strangers. Although these dogs will long if felt that they are being deprived of love and attention. An Afghan Hound will do better with older children, at one time the breed had a reputation for being untrustworthy, but has now been replaced by a character that while still spirited it is said to be more amenable to training and discipline, as they can be disobedient if the dog is poorly trained. Afghan Hounds can be quite difficult to housebreak. Some are timid and highly-strung. It is also important due to their aloof nature that they can become extremely distant and unresponsive if they are not engaged at an early age. Afghan Hounds are tall and slender with a long narrow, refined head, silky topknot and powerful jaws. The muzzle is slightly convex ('Roman nose') with a black nose. There is little or no stop. The teeth should meet in a level or scissor like bite. The dark eyes are shaped almost like an almond. The ears lie flat on the dog's head. They will be long and strong. The height at the dog's withers should be almost level, the abdomen will slightly tuck up. The hip bone of the Afghan Hound is very prominent. The front legs of the dog should be strong and straight, the feet too are large in shape and will be covered in long hair. The Afghan Hound's tail has a curl on the ring at the tip, but is not carried over the dogs back. The long, rich silky coat of the Afghan Hound is most often the colour of sand with a darker face ears and fringes, though all colours are permitted. Markings however are discouraged. Afghan Hound Dogs tend to be 27-29 inches (68.58-73.66cm) slightly less for Afghan Hound bitches. Weight: 58-64lb (26-34kg). Health: generally the Afghan Hound is a very healthy dog, but does have a low pain tolerance which means that the dog will suffer from minor injuries. The dogs energy level is moderate to very high so it is important to be aware of their unique nature, haughty attitude and sight hound mentality. The Afghan Hound would benefit from a large fenced garden with lots of room for the dog to run about. We do not recommend small areas for the dog as he will need plenty of room to exercise being a larger breed of dog. A lot of dedication will be required to motivate and train your new dog. Afghan Hounds will need lots of exercise, large safe open areas are ideal for this type of dog as the Afghan Hound will need at least 30 minutes of walking a day. Life Expectancy is in the region of 10-15 years. The Afghan Hound has a long Silky coat with short hair on their faces, back and pasterns. They should be groomed with a bath and blow dried at least once a week. If it is not practical to do this during the week then it is best to keep your Afghan Hound in a short cut.
